Chapter 9

Before Marc came back into the room, Ian said, so softly Galen probably wouldn’t have heard him if he’d been fully human, “Believe it or not, I like Marc. Or, more, I respect him. But damn, it’s so easy to get his goat.”

Galen smiled. “You do like being the provocateur.”

“It amuses me. Something that rarely happens in my rather mundane life.”

“Why don’t I believe that?” Marc said from the kitchen doorway. He held up the coffeepot. “Anyone want a refill?”

“You’ve been eavesdropping,” Ian replied while holding out his cup.

“Not intentionally, but when I hear someone trying to keep their words private, it piques my interest.” Marc poured coffee for all of them. “Loup have excellent hearing, in case you weren’t aware of that.” He took the pot back to the kitchen, then returned to sit beside Galen. “Is your life really mundane, Ian?”

“More than I’d like,” Ian replied. “As I told you, I’m self-employed. What I didn’t say is, I’m a music tutor. Now don’t get me wrong, I love what I do, but it’s hardly the most exciting job on a day-to-day basis. The rewards come when a student finally gets the hang of it and is able to produce beautiful music with their instrument.” He took a sip of coffee. “Of course, there are the times when I get to play spy, to find out information that my superiors might be interested in. That’s how I discovered what Walker and Trace were up to.”

“I’ll admit, that surprises me,” Marc told him. “I pictured you in a fancy office, probably overly decorated, making your money by investing in, I don’t know, oil, or other fossil fuels, or real estate, since that’s where the profits are. Driving an expensive car to show off.”

Ian looked incensed. “First off, almost everything you mentioned is destructive to the planet. Elves are, by our very natures, the protectors of all living things. Secondly, does this look pretentious?” He swept his hand down, indicating the jeans and touristy T-shirt he was wearing.

“Those are camouflage for what we’ve been doing.”

“Bullshit. It’s how I almost always dress.” Ian paused, a small smile on his lips. “Except when I go to the opera.”

“The opera?” Marc shot him a disbelieving look, then shook his head. “Okay, you got me on that one. Believe it or not, I did know that elves, in general, do their best to protect the planet—unless they’re like Walker. I have the feeling he couldn’t give a damn.”

“Probably not. He’s a self-centered, self-absorbed, self-serving…well, you get the picture.”

Galen laughed, even though the basic idea was frightening, considering what Walker was trying to do. “Self-concerned, self-indulgent?”

“Self-loving?” Marc added with a grin.

Galen snorted. “Probably. I mean, who’d want to have sex with someone like him?”

They were still chuckling when Galen heard a sound from upstairs. It was apparent that the others had as well. They went silent, each one going on the defensive as they stood as one, heading to the stairs.

Rénald appeared at the top, holding up his hand.
